Verified Purchase. It took me until season 5 was airing originally before I started to watch. Of course like everyone else, I was hooked instantly.

I loved it so much I decided to start from the very beginning again when I saw it on Amazon. Beautifully acted, and lovingly produced, there is so much to enjoy about this series it's hard to pick out the best parts.

There is a wonderful balance between the storylines with the servants and the aristocrats. The characters are beautifully drawn and very relatable.

The truth is at the end of the day it's an extremely high end "soap opera". I mean that in the best way possible.

It's a pure joy to watch. I've been watching this series repeatedly for years. I've watched it five time through.

Unbelievably, I am just now looking at the reviews. I have never, ever, ever seen such an overwhelming five-star review. There is nothing left to say at this point about this series because everyone knows what it encompasses and if it's for them.

I just truly thank PBS for producing and broadcasting this series. It is sorely needed in this world of crudeness mistaken for talent.

Honestly, it didn't need a bit of that to be superb. That is the sign of true artistic expression, true artistic talent and creativity, and I'm so thankful for this series.

Adult humor, intelligence, silliness, irony, deep character development, historical accuracy, it has it all. Those shows and movies endeavoring to gain success through shock value and exploiting women, for example, have much to be jealous of, because this series kicks those series' asses.

The historical accuracy down to how they sit, speak, move their heads, et cetera, is extensively researched and executed, but the humor and vulnerability of aristocracy makes us watch it.

Lord Grantham, well, he was Squiggy in Knotting Hill, and I was so surprised to see him here in such a gallant role, such a dichotomy, but he pulled it off beautifully.

I binged watched from the first episode Wonderful series. I binged watched from the first episode to the very last.

It was interesting to see how people lived in a different place and time and how the characters developed along the various story lines.

Very well done. The garments were beautiful. All in all, I would highly recommend Downton Abbey to anyone interested in different historical periods.

Every character in Downton Abbey is brilliantly cast and even more so brilliantly acted. If you enjoy watching productions whose main focus is human interest then this is the series for you.

The interaction among the members of the staff and among the members of the family as they take you through what it was like to live that life and how superbly they portray the demeanor and etiquette of that era is acted so naturally that you feel as though you are there with them.

Every one of them is so genuine. I would find it hard to chose a favorite. If you need car crashes and things being blown up and all other sorts of shock-value violence you should definitely not choose Downton Abbey for this show is not about special effects, it's about real acting.

An intriguing look into the lives of wealthy British aristocracy and their large and diverse group of servants, as they face the challenges of a changing world in early 20th century England.

The cast is terrific, delivering performances that inspire drama, empathy and well placed humor as they portray a compelling story that draws you into their world.

From the father who is trying to secure his families future, sibling rivalry run amok, a dysfunctional relationship with a stuffy but very amusing mother-in-law, and an interloping third cousin, to the infighting and politics of the house staff, the myriad of story lines keeps your interest throughout.

There are so many characters that it all seems a bit much for the first few episodes. But once you get to know the characters it becomes easy and delightful to follow.

The acting, the story line, the backdrop are all first rate. If you love period pieces, this is definitely a drama you need to watch.

Seeing the British aristocracy have to change with the times and the growth of the characters will make you want to watch this through all five seasons.

Passmore, Mrs. Hughes, Anna and Bates and despise Mr. Green and Thomas. This show has such good acting that you feel like you are a part of it all.

Try it and I assure you, the Yorkshire countryside, the castle and the characters will keep you enthralled. I started hearing the raves about Downton Abbey a few years ago but didn't want to jump in to a story half told.

Kept trying to catch up with the beginning of a re-run session on PBS but never got there; its availability on Prime was one of my main reasons for joining.

Am almost finished with season one although I accidently started with an episode in season four or five which confirmed my wisdom in starting at the beginning.

Even after I corrected my Prime settings it took one or two episodes to place each character in his or her place in the story. Now I am hooked. From the perspective of this century one has to wonder at the loyalty of the staff and the entitlement of many of the "upstairs" characters.

Well maybe not the latter so much; we do have lots of current examples - several of them running for President. The stories of the women are particularly compelling and aggravating.

Maggie Smith is snide and, as always, wonderful and I have to believe reincarnation may have played a role there. She is the dowager countess!

While I would have hated living there, I love visiting Downton Abbey. Don't miss it, but do start at the beginning. See all reviews from the United States.

Top international reviews. In fact, in spite of the fact that Downton Abbey took the Emmy Award for , i personally thought that the latter two were the better films and this is due to the fact that the plot in Downton Abbey sometimes stretches the line of credibility.

Having said the above, this sumptious costume drama set in England in the years leading up to the First World War about the complicated community of Downton Abbey makes rivetting television viewing.

It is about the lives of the Crawley family that have owned Downton Abbey for generations and the lives of the servants of this prestigious family.

I will not elaborate on the plot, other than to say the servants know the secrets of the family while the family know so few of theirs.

The acting from the whole cast is impeccable and while Maggie Smith has been singled out, they all give magnificent performances.

Needless to say the cinemtography is outstanding and the attention to detail brilliant. Just one small thing in the opening to the film, the camera follows telephone lines, multiple ones, that would not have been in place at that time I'm being picky!!!

An excellent TV series worthy of place in your film collection. Thank you for your feedback. Sorry, we failed to record your vote.

Please try again. This review is primarily for the technical quality of the Blu-ray edition of Downton Abbey Pt1. I guess I am not alone in watching the series in reverse order.

The video quality is absolutely stunning! However, not so with Downton Abbey. ITV have excelled themselves. Furthermore, it was so much more enjoyable watching the episodes without the interminable interruptions of the adverts - in some cases the programme interval seemed shorter than the adverts.

I know that you can fast forward the PVR but the adverts still cause unnecessary disruption. In due course I will be re-watching the second series by way of dvd - but definitely Blu-ray.

Aside from the technical quality the series is compelling viewing. No expense seems to have been spared on the production of this wonderful period piece.

Wonderful acting from everyone. This expensive 'soap' can go on for many more series providing there is sufficient money in the pot!

I hate ironing but I got through a backlog of ironing without noticing! This is a very entertaining and gripping story, wonderfully acted and the settings and sumptuous costumes are a pleasure to the eye.

The only downside is the format of the video which presents each episode as a separate section and I would have thought that it would be an easy matter to stream all the episodes into one continuous viewing.

At the end of each episode you have to select the next which can be a bit confusing. There are 3 discs. Lady Mary fell for another fast driver, retired racing car driver Henry Talbot who went into the used car business with Tom Branson.

Mary inherited half of Downton with her own heir on the way — she was pregnant at the end of Season 6.

This couple survived imprisonment, murder accusations and a brutal rape. Everyone gets older and more mellow, even the fabulous Countess Violet.

She was finally happy to relax a bit and help her friends and family find happiness. Carson finally retired due to a palsy that caused his hands to shake.

Unlucky in love former chauffeur Tom opened a used car showroom with new brother in law Henry. The actor who plays Tom hints that his handsome character may find real love again soon.

After an absolutely torturous romantic life, Edith finally marries Bertie Pelham, the Marquess of Hexham. In a sweet comeuppance, the Marchioness of Hexham outranks the female members of her immediate family, including her mother.

But more importantly, her new hubby accepts illegitimate daughter Marigold. After years of scheming and pining and a near suicide, Barrow finally softened and got the job of his dreams replacing Carson.

After a few scullery heartbreaks under the watchful but firm eye of surrogate mother Mrs. Patmore, Daisy finally met a nice guy, Andy.

The dog in the opening shot is actually Pharaoh, the first dog of Downton who appeared in So Pharaoh died off between Season 1 and 2 and was replaced by Ellie who started playing Isis.

Originally the producers of Downton were going to keep the replacement a secret. Hugh Bonneville, right on the money, said Downton viewers would instantly spot the difference and complain!

Pharoh played by Roly was a male whereas Isis played by Ellie was a female. So the back story was created that Pharaoh died and the Crawleys got a new dog called Isis.

Bonneville shared another secret about Ellie — her tendency to cause expensive damage. Who can forget this snowy romantic moment, a Christmas miracle.

We wondered if it would ever actually happen, but it finally did once Lavinia died of the Spanish flu and boorish Sir Carlisle was sent packing.

Until yet another memorable and shocking Downton Christmas Special moment…. In the early days of Downton, Edith is always eclipsed by her sisters: charismatic Lady Mary and the pretty and daring Lady Sybil.

That aside it is a wonderful rainy winter's afternoon's entertainment not to be missed and I cannot wait for series 2 due out in September!

You will relish the exchanges between Maggie Smith who has always been a wonderful actress - I don't understand why she has not been made a Dame yes and Elizabeth McGovern, full of propriety, pinched acidity but eventually tolerating each other in agreement.

The entire cast provides superb acting and the narrative is rich in information, plots and subplots, understairs politics, greed and redemption.

You can see the passing of a century and people's lives changing over time. What makes this better than Uptstairs Downstairs is the cast and the superb acting.

Not to be missed. You will enjoy every minute of it. It is very rare that I find a television show that is so well-done and such a pure unadulterated joy to watch that there isn't a single thing I would change "Downton Abbey" is such a show!

I was intrigued right from the beginning of episode 1, and for me there was not a dull moment in the entire series. The story follows the daily lives of both the residing family and the staff of the house, and I found both to be utterly fascinating.

Every character is lovingly drawn, every actor's performance absolutely spot-on, and every scene is done with incredible attention to detail.

All of this along with the great writing and directing and the beautiful cinematography adds up to a series that is simply pitch-perfect!

If there is one complaint I have then it is that this first season was much too short! Only 7 episodes that really isn't much. I wish there had been more episodes, but from what I hear they are filming season 2 right now so I can look forward to that I watched this wonderful series when it first came on the tv.

I loved it then and now I love owning it. One of the finest series I have ever seen. That'll be great, didn't get to see it at the pictures so I can't wait to own it too.

Load more international reviews. I have only just got around to watching it. What a gem it is!! Boasting a fantastic cast with the presence of Dame Maggie Smith, the period detail in this piece is excellent, Maggie's characters outfits were always particularly impressive.

The period in detail is from the sinking of the Titanic up until the announcement of war with Germany in Storylining in the series is excellent, I particularly enjoyed Thomas's love interest in the first episode, the missing snuff box and the sudden death of the Turkish visitor.

It's easy to see why this series commanded audiences of around 10 million on Sundays and that's without Scotland watching. If you enjoy period drama, great acting, attention to detail - well this series is sure to make your day.

Can't wait for series 2 on DVD! Over Xmas they repeated D. Abbey again over 3 days and I gave it another chance!

Having just finished watching it now I can only say that it was absorbing, interesting, wonderfully photographed and superbly cast So if you are looking to watch a superb costume drama and have the choice of these two I am glad I gave it a second chance and Series 2 is on the telly in the Autumn!

Cannot wait!!!!!! Maggie Smith and Michelle Dockery in particular stand out The delightful first series of this lovely programme created by Julian Fellowes.

I have also reviewed series two, which I bought with this as a present for my sister, who had not seen it. To my mind it's the sort of programme that leaves you slightly wishing it hadn't finished when it ends, and looking forward to another episode.

Slightly more for the ladies than the men, but that said I think a lot of men secretly, and some quite openly, admit they like it too.

Opens up an era when it was good to be one of the nobility - maybe not so good to be one of the servants, but they don't do too badly in this household.

Enjoy it with a cup of tea and the biscuits and no interruptions. One person found this helpful. This is one of those series that got everyone talking and I had missed out on.

When the hype about it simply did not cease I guessed it was about time I did something about it and, rather than waiting for Series 1 to come around on Blighty, Gold, Yesterday or whatever I took the plunge and bought the DVD.

I think not! After an initial period of adjustment, getting the characters sorted out and so on, the series quickly grew on me and had me exclaiming at the screen pointless exercise!

If, like me, you've missed out and you can spare the odd evening or two to watch one of those truly great dramas that British TV is so consummately brilliant at making, then don't dilly dally any longer Get It!

Unfortunately being in STV land I did not get to see this when it was first broadcast. I was a just little sceptical at first, seeing as it had been created by Julian Fellowes I thought that it might be just an extended Gosford Park.

How wrong I was. This is without doubt one of the most exquisite, elegant and engrossing dramas I have ever watched. I will not try to add anymore to the reviews already published, suffice to say that I started watching and could not stop.

The storylines, attention to period detail, the costumes, the acting and the sets combine to produce something that rightly deserves the praise it has gained.

A final point, having not seen the original T. Consequently I went for the Blu Ray version, and the colours and sound are wonderful and only add to the enjoyment of watching this excellent series.

I thoroughly enjoyed this series. Written by Julian Fellows it is new, not adapted from any book. The characters change through out the series and the ones you hate at the beginning don't necessarily stay the same.

It follows a household on a large country estate from to , both above and below stairs. It tries to merge historical facts with fiction.

Julian Fellows has a very fresh and easy way of writing, the house is beautiful, and although all the cast are excellent,Maggie Smith stands out.

She portrays her Dowager Duchess as very old school while the rest of her family try to bring her into the 20th century. It is done with great wit Well worth a look.

I don't usually buy into period dramas, but I was ill over Christmas and fancied watching something 'gentle'.

I wouldn't call it gentle though but you get easily absorbed into it, it's very easy to pick up along the way, like I did hence why I bought the box set.

I was really impressed by Downton Abbey, I thought the storylines were gripping, they make you speculate about what might happen in future episodes.

I didn't find it cringeworthy or cheesy or cliched at all, which is something I can't stand. It's really very good, well made and so many characters and storylines that interweave there's something for everyone, even if you're not a typical costume drama type person.

I can't wait for the second series and I wish my boyfriend watched it because I want to chat about it! Imho, series 1 and 2 were Mr Fellowes' best of the lot.

I most enjoyed this 3-disc set, just ideal for a late autumn evening's viewing. Back in time to another world, and different standards.

Virtually faultless acting throughout. I do recommend it. I watched this series as it was airing and it immediately hooked me because of the brilliant characters and the lavish settings.

Maggie Smith delivers some of the most memorable lines, but the younger cast members are also very good. It's slow-paced and just the perfect thing to watch on a quiet evening.

I got the DVDs for my mum who hadn't been able to see all episodes and I'm looking forward to watching it again with her since it's one of those series I could watch over and over.

I'd recommend this to any fan of period drama. Stellar service from Amazon as usual. I had some problems with the carrier they used for Italy, but everything was solved after I contacted Amazon.

The DVDs were well packaged and arrived without a scratch. For the most part good costume drama in the "states" consists of garbage or as you would say "its rubbish" and is usually done by actors who take there demeanor with them, not is the case with this show and its award winning cast.
